There are some weddings that stay with you long after the day ends, and Alex and Sophia’s September wedding at the Samoset Resort is one I will never forget. The entire day unfolded with a soft overcast glow that made the colors richer and the moments feel even more intimate. It was one of those Maine days where the sky acts as the perfect natural diffuser, giving everything a calm, cinematic atmosphere.
Shooting this wedding was extra special because Alex and Sophia are personal friends. Being invited not only to document their day but to celebrate alongside their families and many mutual friends made the experience incredibly meaningful. It is rare to witness a wedding both as a photographer and as someone who knows the couple personally, and it added a depth to the day that I will always cherish.
One of my favorite parts of the day was walking out to the Samoset Breakwater for their private vow exchange. The ocean was vibrantly blue, the air was cool, and the misty light wrapped around them in the dreamiest way. There is something magical about that stretch of stone reaching into the water, and watching them speak their hearts to each other with the waves behind them created one of the most beautiful scenes I have photographed.
The reception took place under an elegant tent overlooking the coastline, and the timing could not have been more perfect. Just as guests settled in for dinner, a huge rainstorm rolled through. The sound of the rain hitting the tent added this cozy, romantic feeling to the night while everyone stayed warm and dry inside listening to the toasts and speeches. It was as if the weather was part of the celebration, enhancing the mood without interrupting a thing. One of the most iconic moments of the reception came when the bride’s dad and the groom’s dad got up in hats and glasses and performed Blue Brothers Soul Man. It was unexpected, hilarious, and had the entire tent cheering.
The design of the reception was absolutely stunning. Lush florals filled the space with color and texture, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that paired beautifully with the coastal setting. The tablescapes were carefully layered and thoughtfully arranged, mixing natural tones and soft accents that added so much depth to the tent.
One of the standout design elements was the brown and white checkered dance floor. It brought a stylish and unexpected touch to the tent and looked incredible in photos, especially once the dancing began. It anchored the entire reception design and gave the space a unique sense of personality.
Alex and Sophia themselves were radiant. They have an effortless joy that made the entire day feel lighthearted and full of love. Seeing their families connect, watching their friends celebrate them, and getting to be part of it all was such an honor. It is not often that I get to combine my role as a photographer with the joy of celebrating people I care about, and it made every moment even more meaningful.
Their Samoset Resort wedding was the perfect blend of emotion, beauty, and unforgettable moments. From the quiet vow exchange on the breakwater to the rainstorm that arrived just in time to make the reception feel magical, everything aligned perfectly for a day that felt straight out of a storybook. If you are dreaming of a coastal Maine wedding with breathtaking scenery and moments that feel deeply personal, Samoset Resort is truly one of the most inspiring places to begin that story.
