There’s something especially meaningful about photographing a couple in the neighborhood they call home, and Maddy and Ben’s West Village NYC engagement session felt exactly like that. From quiet corners along Commerce Street to wandering around Greenwich and 11th, their session felt less like a photoshoot and more like stepping into a real Saturday afternoon in New York City with them.

The evening actually started with some pretty heavy rain, but honestly, it made the session even better. Armed with umbrellas and embracing the weather, the two of them leaned fully into the moment. Some of my favorite NYC engagement photos happen when couples let the city do its thing instead of chasing perfect weather, and this session was proof of that. The rain reflecting off the streets, the glow from storefronts, and the cozy energy between them made everything feel incredibly cinematic.

We wandered through so many iconic West Village spots throughout the session. From the charm of Waverly Place to quiet side streets near Jane Street Park, every stop felt personal because these are the places that make up their everyday life together. That’s one of the things I love most about engagement sessions in NYC. Every block tells a story, especially when it’s somewhere meaningful to the couple.
Photographing couples in neighborhoods they truly love always creates a more natural and relaxed experience. Instead of rushing between tourist locations, we simply bopped around the West Village together, stopping whenever the light, architecture, or energy felt right.

As the rain cleared, we finished the session the best way possible with pizza and ice cream while walking through the neighborhood. Honestly, it felt very fitting for New York and even more fitting for them. A little savory, a little sweet, and somehow perfectly balanced, kind of like love itself.
If their engagement session is any indication, their wedding day is going to be filled with the same effortless joy and connection that made this West Village NYC engagement session so memorable.

If you’re planning a New York City engagement session in the West Village, turning it into a full weekend experience is honestly the best way to do it. Between the tree lined streets, cozy cafes, brownstones, and iconic downtown energy, the neighborhood feels romantic without trying too hard. Whether you want something luxurious, boutique, or classic New York, here are five amazing places to stay in or near the West Village for your trip.
For couples wanting something more historic and iconic New York, The Jane has such a unique character. It sits right in the West Village and gives a very old New York feel that works perfectly with the neighborhood’s charm and slower pace.
